Configuring PostgreSQL on RHEL

Configure PostgreSQL by storing the database files in an alternative location, initializing the data directory, setting the database service to start on boot, and start the database service.
  1. (Optional) If you are migrating to PostgreSQL 12 from an older version follow the steps in the section Upgrading to PostgreSQL 12.
  2. Initialize the PostgreSQL data directory: 
    sudo -u postgres /usr/pgsql-12/bin/initdb --encoding UTF8 /var/lib/pgsql/12/data
  3. Set the database service to start on boot: sudo systemctl enable postgresql-12
  4. If you are migrating from an older version of PostgreSQL, you will need to stop the old version and disable the old one before proceeding to the next step.
  5. Start the database service: 
    sudo systemctl start postgresql-12
  6. Check the status: 
    sudo systemctl status postgresql-12
