The combined solution has enabled Parkview, a not-for-profit, community-owned network of eight northeastern Indiana hospitals, to develop a series of expert business rules that improve the efficiency and safety of medication ordering and administration. Parkview has improved medication turnaround time by an average of 43 minutes and is providing its clinicians with valuable tools that support patient safety and help prevent adverse drug events.
"At Parkview Health, we are focused on how we use healthcare decision making to deliver trusted care and improve health in the community," said Jerry Mourey, vice president of information systems at Parkview Health. "Blaze Advisor and Carecast have proven to be valuable technologies for the implementation of new decision management initiatives."
Carecast creates a comprehensive lifetime patient record by automating the workflow of users and supporting clinical, financial and administrative processes. As the embedded rules management component of Carecast, Blaze Advisor provides a rules building engine that enables healthcare organizations to develop tailored decision support functionality that addresses the requirements of specialty areas and patient safety initiatives. The use of expert rules allows doctors to make more informed decisions regarding care, to adopt best practices and to better understand the cause and impact of their decisions. Healthcare business managers gain the ability to control rules and business policies, and to set actionable limits that are flagged when reached.
"IDX's adoption of Blaze Advisor provides Carecast customers with an extremely robust decision engine and rules management solution," said Dr. Robert Abarbanel, senior director of product strategy for Carecast. "Working in conjunction with the entire Carecast clinical system, Blaze Advisor rules management provides unmatched efficiencies in workflow, decision making and business processes."
Using Blaze Advisor, Parkview has implemented an expert rule that flags pediatric patients and requires verification of medication dosages based on the patient's weight. If the weight is not listed or does not correspond to the dose ordered, the system alerts the pharmacist to contact the patient's clinician to confirm the necessary information. Rules are also used to calculate estimated creatinine clearance when ordering certain antibiotics or other drugs than can affect kidney function; require potassium level verification for patients receiving Digoxin or potassium supplements; and require INR verification for patients receiving warfarin.
"Blaze Advisor is increasingly being embedded as the decision management component within other enterprise software applications, such as IDX Carecast," said Carole-Ann Matignon, vice president of product management for Enterprise Decision Management Technologies at Fair Isaac. "The integration of Blaze Advisor within other software solutions provides compelling value to businesses looking to combine their existing technology with the industry's most powerful rules engine. Within Carecast, Blaze Advisor delivers consistent and precise decision management capabilities to analyze patient data against complex expert rules, helping to improve patient care."
