Restoring a Database Backup

Use the pg_restore program to restore a database backup previously created with the pg_dump program.

Extensive documentation for this program is located at: https://www.postgresql.org/docs/9.5/static/app-pgrestore.html.

Windows

Minimal steps to restore a database backup are listed below. It is assumed that the superuser for the database is postgres. The superuser for Xpress Insight will be the same as the Windows account that installed the software.

The following commands assume that the database receiving the restored data is a clean database installed by the Xpress Insight installer program.
set PGBIN=%XPRESSDIR%\insight\db\pgsql\bin
set PGUSER=postgres
set BKFILE=insight.backup

%PGBIN%\pg_restore -c -d insightdb %BKFILE%

Linux

Minimal steps to restore a database backup are listed below. It is assumed that the superuser for the database is postgres. The superuser for Xpress Insight will be the same as the Linux account that installed the software.

The following commands assume that the database receiving the restored data is a clean database installed by the Xpress Insight installer program.
BKFILE=insight.backup
pg_restore -U postgres -c -d insightdb $BKFILE

Upgrading a restored backup

If you must restore from a database backup to a newer version of Xpress Insight, then you will need to manually upgrade the database, and restore the Master Key file that is used for encrypting sensitive data in the database (i.e. passwords). The following commands stop the server and upgrade the restored database, then restart the server.
systemctl stop xpress-insight-server
cd $XPRESSDIR/insight/db/upgrade
psql -Upostgres insightdb < insight-postgresql-upgrade.sql
cd -
systemctl start xpress-insight-server
