Creating a Database Backup

Use the pg_dump program to create a backup file from the PostgreSQL database.

Full documentation for this program is located at: https://www.postgresql.org/docs/9.5/static/app-pgdump.html.

The Xpress Insight database schema contains OIDs, so the -o argument must be specified. The custom format is recommended.

Windows

Minimal steps to execute the backup are specified below. It is assumed that the superuser for the database server is postgres. The superuser for Xpress Insight will be the same as the Windows user account that installed the software.
set PGBIN=%XPRESSDIR%\insight\db\pgsql\bin
set PGUSER=postgres
set BKFILE=insight.backup

%PGBIN%\pg_dump -o -Fc insightdb > %BKFILE%

Linux

Minimal steps to execute the backup are specified below. It is assumed that the superuser for the database server is postgres. The superuser for Xpress Insight will be the same as the user account that installed the software.
BKFILE=insight.backup
pg_dump -U postgres -o -Fc insightdb > $BKFILE

The pg_dump command can be executed without shutting down the Xpress Insight server or the PostgreSQL database service.
