Backing up and Restoring the Repository

The Xpress Insight repository is a PostgreSQL database.

You should back up the repository regularly, and before any major change—for example, when upgrading your system. The relevant documentation alerts you when this is necessary.

You can back up (or export) and recover (or import) the Xpress Insight repository in two ways:
  • With the insightcmd command line tool (preferred) introduced with Xpress Insight version 4.9.
  • With supported standard database administration tools available to all PostgreSQL installations.

There is no need to back up the mirror database used by Tableau for FICO to integrate with Xpress Insight.

Backing up the repository

If you have more than one active version of Xpress Insight, it is good practice to include the version number in the file name when you create a backup of the repository, to identify it accurately. For the basic steps, see Creating a Database Backup.

Restoring the repository

You should always restore any repository backup to the same version of Xpress Insight as the repository was taken from. For the minimal description of the steps required, see Restoring a Database Backup.

The Xpress Insight Master Key File

It is also important to ensure that you have a secure copy of the Xpress Insight master key file .xpress-insight-key.

The key in this file is used to encrypt and decrypt Tableau and mirror database passwords, LDAP server password, worker passwords, and local user passwords . It will only be present if you have configured the server with passwords for Tableau or the mirror. If this key is lost then any configured passwords will be unreadable and you need to reconfigure the server.
Note The master key file is a hidden file
  • On Linux you must use the command ls -a to display it.
  • On Windows, select the View > Show/hide > Hidden items checkbox in the File Explorer.
