Precautions when Uninstalling (and Reinstalling) Tableau Server

If you need to uninstall and reinstall Tableau, or uninstall Tableau completely, make sure you understand how Tableau license activation and data files are handled.

License activation

Tableau closely monitors license usage, and you are allowed to activate a particular license only a limited number of times without prior deactivation before the license is locked. To reactivate the license, you must then contact Tableau support and provide evidence that the license is not currently in use. You can avoid this by deactivating the license before you uninstall.

Data files

When you uninstall Tableau Server, some Tableau data, configuration, and log files are not deleted. If you want to remove Tableau Server completely from your computer, you can use the tableau-server-obliterate script from Tableau. This script removes all files related to Tableau, so make sure any backup files you want to save are copied to a safe location.
