Configuration and Administration

You can customize the configuration of Xpress Insight and Xpress Workbench in various ways. Depending on your setup, there are also administrative tasks you might need to perform.
In general, the same configuration and administration options are available for the Docker versions of the software as for the standard on-premises version. However, the specifics of how to perform some tasks are different, as described in this section.

  • Configuring the Workbench Data Directory
    Xpress Workbench stores the data for each project in a separate directory. If you plan to deploy the Workbench container, you must configure a location in your local file system for these project directories.
  • Changing Ports
    If the default ports for the Xpress Insight server and Xpress Workbench are already in use, you can change the configuration to use different ports.
  • Overriding Insight Application Properties
    Instead of directly editing application.properties, you can customize the Xpress Insight server or worker by overriding application properties in the appropriate override.properties file.

    You can configure Insight to write log messages to a file.
  • Changing Database Passwords
    If you are using MySQL database persistence, the passwords for the MySQL database are stored in files that are part of the Docker configuration. If you are also deploying a mirror database for integration with Tableau or other business intelligence software, passwords for this database are stored in separate files. It is recommended that these passwords be changed after deployment.
  • Encrypting Sensitive Application Properties
    You can encrypt passwords and other sensitive values that are specified in the application properties of the Insight server and worker.
  • Enabling HTTPS Connections
    You can configure your deployment to use secure https: connections between the server and worker.
  • Running a Security Update
    You should periodically rebuild the Docker images in order to deploy the latest security updates.
  • Wiping Insight Data
    If you want to start over with a clean deployment, you can wipe all of your stored data before redeploying.
  • Connecting Xpress Workbench to Xpress Insight
    Before you can publish a project from Xpress Workbench to Xpress Insight, you must first configure the credentials for accessing the Insight server.
  • Working with Conda Environments
    Conda is an open-source tool for managing packages, dependencies, and environments. At least one Conda environment is required if you are developing Insight apps using Python, Java, or R.
