Further information
1. The first argument of the routine is interpreted as a list of flags if it starts with a '-'.
2. Deletion will occur only if runmode is "clean" or if the flag "-f" is used.
3. The file name may contain a pattern ( e.g. "*.obj"): all files corresponding to this patern will be deleted.
4. The directories containing the file are also deleted if they become empty after the deletion.
5. Execution of the program terminates if the deletion fails and exitonfail is true unless flag "-i" is used.
