Growing Pains and Emerging Threats
In 2024, the fraud landscape in Hungary continued its concerning upward trajectory, with total losses increasing by 22% to reach 8,696 million HUF. While Card Not Present (CNP) fraud remains the dominant threat at 86% of all losses, its proportional share has decreased from the peak of 97% in 2023 due to a significant rise in the "Others" category, which jumped to 12% of total losses.
This shift represents a diversification of fraud tactics compared to previous years, when CNP fraud was even more dominant. This shift is similar to countries where we see the rise of scams on cards, which can be often hidden in the traditional CNP segment due to the way card fraud gets reported today.
