Card Fraud Largely Unchecked
Back in 2021 we saw the accelerating rise of fraud levels in Poland and warned about the threats it posed if effective action was not taken.
In 2024, the fraud landscape in Poland reached a concerning milestone with total losses climbing to 115.84 million PLN, representing a significant 21% increase from 2023. Card Not Present (CNP) fraud has continued as the overwhelmingly dominant threat, accounting for 88% of all losses and growing by 22% in the past year alone. This channel contributed to 92% of the total fraud growth from 2023 to 2024, highlighting its critical importance in the fraud landscape.
Meanwhile, counterfeit card fraud has dramatically declined over the years, dropping by 92% since 2021 to represent just 1.46% of total losses in 2024. Card Stolen or Lost fraud has become the second most significant threat, comprising 9.54% of total losses and growing by 18% from the previous year.
To mitigate against this ever-growing threat, the time to act is now. Polish banks need to urgently invest in upskilling the fraud teams and arming them with effective decisioning tools capable of assessing the threat beyond just the transactional information, looking at the broader understanding of the customer’s profile and potential anomalous behaviour.
